Haagen and Thonette had nine children and emigrated to ND USA in 1885.They changed their last name to Billet in USA to reflect the town in Norway where they came from – Bilitt. Naming conventions in “old days” Norway: Every child was given a first name and then followed by the patronymic and then followed by the place the child was born or living on when baptized. If the parents moved to another location that name would be added when the child was confirmed. SO: Kari (first name), Haagensdatter (the patronymic), Engeli (place where she was born on or living when baptized), and Hattebol (location name where they lived when she was confirmed). Because patronymics were so common, people added their address (farm name) for clarification. Anton and Kari are buried next to one another in the Lillehammer Cemetery.)
